The Friendship Cup

The Boston Bruins Alumni will play Gazprom Export during Gazprom’s 2006 winter tour with proceeds benefiting the Boston Bruins Charitable Foundation. The Friendship Cup will spotlight Gazprom Export’s efforts in the global energy market with four teams featuring both Olympians and NHL Hall of Famers. Teams (Russian, Bruins alumni, USA, and Canada) will include hockey legends Ray Bourque, Ted Donato, Dave Andreychuck, Luc Robitille, Pat LaFontaine, Chris O’Sullivan, Steve Leach, Eric Weinrich, Scott Young, Steve Rooney, alongside Scott and Mark Fusco. Harry Sinden will serve as honorary coach of team Canada. Also playing for Team USA is Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli.*

Paul Stewart, former NHL referee and current Boston Bruins Foundation Director of Development will referee the games and had this to say about the tournament.

"The Boston Bruins Foundation is extremely excited about this tournament. The right players, the right rinks, the right price, all for the right cause! This will be a great opportunity to see some great hockey and may serve to heat up the cold war. Now we just have to worry about the officiating!"

The tournament kicks off on Wednesday, November 29th at Harvard University's Bright Athletic Center, when Team USA takes on the Bruins Alumni at 5:30 p.m. Comcast will televise The Friendship Cup’s 5:30 p.m. opening game. Following at 7:00 p.m., Team Canada will play Gazprom Export.

Thursday, November 30th teams will take a break to play with kids! Early in the day, players will meet at the IMAX 3D Theatre in Reading, MA. Igor Larinov, Stanley Cup winner, will host the New England Premier of his new movie "Farewell from Moscow." Fans young and old can get autographs at the event from Igor and other stars of the game.

The second day of games will be held on Friday, December 1st at Boston University’s Agganis Arena. This night will showcase game one between Team Canada and Team USA at 5:30 p.m., as well as a 7:00 p.m. tilt between Gazprom Export and the Boston Bruins Alumni.
