It did not take long for Boston University to make a name for itself in the world of women’s ice hockey.
Entering just its fourth season as a varsity program, the Terriers look to continue the impressive strides made over their first three years. During the 2007-08 season, the Terriers reached the Hockey East playoffs for the first time in program history on the strength of a 15-17-3 record, including an 11-9-1 mark in conference play.
Head coach Brian Durocher, who was Jack Parker’s top assistant before taking over the women’s program upon its inception, was tabbed the Coach of the Year by both Hockey East and the New England Hockey Writers’ Association. A goalie and captain of the 1978 men’s ice hockey national championship team, Durocher guided junior goalie Allyse Wilcox to First-Team Hockey East and All-New England honors and sophomore Melissa Anderson to the all-conference second team. Wilcox had an impressive season in goal, posting the seventh-highest save percentage (.925) and ninth-best goals against average (1.96) in the nation. Anderson led the Terrier offense with 29 points, bolstered by 16 goals, while junior co-captain Gina Kearns and freshman Jillian Kirchner tied for the team lead with 16 assists.
With 11 seniors slated to return for the 2008-09 season, the women’s ice hockey team looks to secure even more success at its home ice in Walter Brown Arena, located in the Case Center at 300 Babcock Street.
In addition to the Terriers’ challenging slate, the nation’s top women’s college hockey teams will visit Boston when the Terriers host the 2009 NCAA Women’s Frozen Four at Agganis Arena. Two national semifinal games will be held on Friday, March 20, and the national championship contest will follow on Sunday, March 22.
